ARTIST'S STATEMENT

T. CHICK McCLURE is a Los Angeles based, transgender artist working in the medium of photography. In his work, he explores themes of gender, identity, and authenticity through portraiture and images of the body. Provocative to some, his work examines and challenges the existing state of affairs relating to American social politics and culture as they relate to and impact the transgender community.

BIOGRAPHY

T. CHICK McCLURE was born female-bodied to a conservative, military-household in the 1970s and spent his early life feeling “wrong.” When he couldn’t risk expressing himself as the boy he was, he escaped into his art, depicting himself as male in his drawings as early as three years old. Since those early days, his art has been a place where he could explore themes of gender, masculinity, vulnerability and authenticity without scrutiny.

Seeking through the narrative of an external subject to capture some facet of himself, Chick was able to keep certain truths about himself hidden. However, after publicly coming out as transgender his axis shifted and the desire to live as his authentic-self drove him to start the physical process of transition and, finally, to turn the camera on himself. At last, eliminating the buffer he maintained by shooting others to reveal his true self to the world: Bare. Exposed. Raw.

T. Chick McClure is an openly transgender, fine art photographer, Grammy award-winning director and graduate of the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He lives in The City of Angels with his fiancé, Mary Jo and their two cute, and somewhat insane rescue dogs.
